Botany and Landscape Evolution of the Burren, County Clare

Duration and Dates: Three days, two nights (18th – 20th August 2018)

Itinerary

Botany and Landscape of the Burren, County Clare: The Burren in County Clare is a unique glaciokarst landscape with a rich archaeology, geomorphology and natural history on the western seaboard of Ireland. The iconic landscape of the Burren (from the Irish word “Boíreann” meaning a rocky place) comprises extensive Carboniferous limestone pavements stripped by Quaternary glaciation and sculpted by chemical weathering.  The region has extensive limestone caves, seasonal ‘disappearing lakes’ called turloughs, and a unique flora with both hyperoceanic and alpine elements.

This three day post conference tour will involve expert guided explorations of the Burren’s botany and geomorphology with Dr Stephen Waldren, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin and Dr Mike Simms, National Museums Northern Ireland. Habitats of the Burren are diverse including limestone pavement, calcareous grassland, hazel scrub, ash/hazel woodland, turloughs, cliffs and fen. Many are designated as Special Areas of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive. More than 700 species of plant are found in the Burren including many arctic/alpine rarities such as Dryas octopeta and Saxifraga hypnoides. Lichens also abound including the lowest latitude occurrence of the rare arctic montane Arenaria norvegica.  The landscape is rich in archaeological heritage, including wedge tombs and the famous Polnabrone Dolmen.

Participants will depart Dublin on 18th August and return on 20th, staying at the Hyland Burren Hotel. Planned activities include guided short hikes and bus excursions and a tour of one of the Burren’s famous limestone caves. Costs include all meals, transport, accommodation and expert guides.
